Lichess vs Chess.com: compare the routine you want

Both support playing and learning. Cost, presentation, and the way you review games may matter more than a universal winner.

Lichess and Chess.com are both established places to play chess and work on your game. Lichess lists its playing and training features as free; Chess.com offers free access alongside paid memberships with additional features or limits. Consult their own pages for current details.

Compare the same task

Play a game at a suitable time control, then review one critical position. Can you find the move history, inspect alternatives, and save the position for later? Try a few puzzles and see whether the solution helps you understand the defender’s best reply.

Different interfaces suit different people. Your rating on one platform should not be treated as an exact equivalent of the same number on another; the pools and rating systems differ.

Judge learning separately from entertainment

A site can be enjoyable without supplying the particular lesson you need. If you mostly play fast games, changing platforms may leave the same training gap. Add a deliberate review routine and see whether it improves the questions you ask.

ChessTrainer.org, the publisher of this comparison, is another study option. Its Academy and master-game library focus on connecting moves to explanations. This is a description of learning formats, not an independent benchmark of the services.

Use a small decision test

Choose based on the tasks you will repeat: playing, reviewing, solving, and revisiting mistakes. Check current costs before paying, and keep the combination simple enough to maintain. One completed review is more useful than an elaborate tool collection you rarely open.

Feature availability is not the same as effective use. In either service, you can finish a game and immediately start another without learning from the first one. Conversely, a short, careful review can produce a useful lesson without a complicated tool collection.

Run the same learning task on both

Choose a completed game or a comparable built-in exercise, depending on the supported workflow. Find one critical position, write your candidate, and investigate the opponent’s strongest reply. Record whether the interface made it easy to follow the line and understand the result.

Then hide the feedback and explain the mistake. If you cannot, identify what is missing: a rule, a tactical pattern, or an assessment of the final position. A separate lesson may address that gap better than changing platforms.

Keep ratings out of this small trial. A higher number on a different site does not show that its training improved your play. Compare the quality of the decisions and the routine you can sustain, then check current subscription details only where paid features matter to that routine.

Your turn

Pause. Think. Explain.

Why should you avoid comparing progress using raw rating numbers from two different platforms?

Reveal the explanation

The ratings come from different player pools and systems, so equal numbers are not guaranteed to represent equal strength. Track your decisions and results within a consistent context instead.
